THE CAT AT THE DOOR
Ken-chan was a black male cat from Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. Beginning in 2017, he became famous for repeatedly attempting to enter the Onomichi City Museum of Art.
Each visit created another gentle standoff at the automatic doors. Museum security staff—especially guard Sadao Umayahara—would patiently guide him back outside. Ken-chan would leave, wait and try again.
The museum shared these encounters online, where their unusual friendship reached audiences throughout Japan and around the world.
Ken-chan was never truly interested in rules. Museum staff believed he was more interested in playing with the guard than viewing the exhibitions.
He kept returning for years. Every closed door became another chapter in his story.
